About Us

photo (2)Lodgepole Quarter Horses is owned and operated by Tim Rhine, his wife Crockett Kemp and their daughter, Bethany. They strive to raise the best in quality Cow Horses, Rope Horses and Versatility Ranch Horses, suitable to take to the arena, the branding pen and use on the ranch. They raise, ride and train with the horse in mind. The soft, time consuming method, of eventually making a bridle horse, or taking a horse as far as it can go towards that end, is the horsemanship philosophy of Tim, Crockett and Bethany.

Tim got his first horse and cattle experience in the Midwest. While in college he was on the livestock judging team, studied animal science and agricultural economics and worked at the beef center. Later while in graduate school he managed a small  registered Angus operation. He then served in the United States Marine Corps and after an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain, went to work as a ranch manager for the largest registered cattle ranching company in the United States, Ankony Angus Corporation. Tim has been a cowboy, ranch manager and ranch owner from Texas to Montana on places ranging in size up to 186,000 acres running 10,000 mother cows. He started a full-blood and pure-bred Simmental breeding herd which grew to be the largest full-blood herd in North America.

Tim has been horseback, doing a job, a large part of his life in all types of country. Horses have always been something special to Tim and have grown more so over the years. In the early 80’s he purchased a stud and small band of mares from John Holman of Grand Junction, Colorado and bred and raised ranch horses and running quarter horses. He became a lifetime member of the AQHA in 1982. Tim believes in the soft approach and maximum communication with his horses and he is a student of the teachings of the late, great, Bill and Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt. He has ridden with Mark Rashid, Buck Brannaman and Paul Dietz, and promotes horsemanship and specialized clinics in Colorado. Recently he has been showing in AQHA Team Roping events and NRCHA Reined Cow Horse shows.

Crockett was raised on a ranch in Central Colorado and grew up with horses, learning at an early age the closeness and bonding capable between man and horse. She earned her degree in Agricultural Business from Colorado State University in 1984. Crockett and Tim moved to the Central Coast of California in 1986 and bought and sold many ranch raised and cowboy ridden horses, transitioning them into dependable arena team roping partners for novice ropers. Crockett was able to experience, comprehend and capitalize on the unique differences between well trained ranch horses that could travel through the mountains and be calm in the branding pen and intense performance horses that knew only the arena. She has learned that the thread that connects all horses from the ranch to the arena is listening to the horse. Take the time to listen and your horse will listen to you and give you his all. Crockett continues her quest of expanding and improving her horsemanship though riding and training. She has read the works of, and attended clinics with Mark Rashid who promotes softness and communication with the horse through thought processes and a unique methodology. She has attended clinics and learned from Paul Dietz and Buck Brannaman, who follow the teachings of Bill and Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt, in classic bridal horse tradition. Crockett is enjoying learning the art of showing Cow Horses and Ranch Versatility Horses while continuing to make them quiet, confident, dependable partners.

She recently showed in the NRCHA Reined Cow Horse Show at the National Western Stock Show and AQHA Team Roping.
